(Bio prepared by the Committee for 2017 TJ Hall of Fame Induction)
Mark grew up in Council Bluffs, attending Rue, Wilson and Thomas Jefferson High School. A week after graduating from high school in 1973, he began working for the Omaha Public Power District. While working for OPPD, he attended college at night and graduated from Iowa Western Community College with an Associate’s Degree in Mathematics, and from Bellevue University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Management of Human Resources.
Mark has always been involved in education. He was elected twice to serve on the Council Bluffs Community School District Board of Education and taught for ten years as an Adjunct Instructor at IWCC. Mark was elected and served two terms as a State Representative. In this public servant role, he managed a number of bills that became law, but the one accomplishment he is most proud of, is working for two years to convince the Legislature to allocate the funds for tasers for the State Troopers.
In 2014, he was elected as the Pottawattamie County Recorder. Since becoming the Recorder, he initiated the process of digitizing all the records in the office and obtained an exception that allowed the Recorder’s Office to become a Passport Acceptance Facility.
Mark has served on a number of Boards, including the IWCC Alumni Association, Union Pacific Railroad Museum, Senior Center and Heartland Chapter of the American Red Cross.
Mark is married to Debbie and they have two sons that have blessed them with six grandchildren.
