’88 Lynx Celebrate 30 Year Anniversary of State Appearance

February 2, 2018

It’s been 30 years since the AL Basketball team shocked the area basketball scene and made their first State Basketball appearance since the 1963 team, 25 years earlier.  Behind first year coach, Dan Koch, the team won the first two games of the season and then lost eleven in a row resulting in a 5 game win season.
Headlines described the sub-state victories and state berth as the “Miracle on Bonham Ave”, “Cinderella Story” and “Unbelievable”.
The Lynx played Harlan (66-63), Lewis Central (67-60) and Ames (58-56) in a fourth quarter comeback to earn their trip to State. After an injury to their point guard in the third quarter, the team rallied for a 2 point win and the trip to Des Moines to play top ranked Cedar Rapids Kennedy.
Entering the state tournament with the worst record, the Lynx continued their unexpected performances, leading at several points in game and ultimately losing by only two points at the final buzzer, 67-69.
